Het is wellicht niet de eerste maar zo goed als zeker de beroemdste zin in de geschiedenis van de conceptuele kunst. Conceptuele kunstenaars zijn dus eerder mystici, net zoals in het soefisme en andere vroege vormen van religieuze bewegingen? We schrijven 1968 en Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) opent er zijn Sentences on Conceptual Art mee, vanuit New York en geen onbelangrijk feit. Eerder had hij, zonder hoofdletters, paragraphs on conceptual art gepubliceerd. Die tekst begint met: 'The editor has written me that he is in favor of avoiding 'the notion that the artist is a kind of ape that has to be explained by the civilized critic.'
