Van 28 mei tot 29 juni toont Sofie Van de Velde in G262 onder de titel ‘The only thing you can’t get is red ink’ het werk van Max Pinckers, Quinten De Bruyn en Gauthier Oushoorn. Deze drie kunstenaars hebben elk een eigen blik op de realiteit. De titel van de tentoonstelling refereert aan een passage uit ‘Welcome to the Desert of the Real’ van Slavoj Žižek:
In an old joke from the defunct German Democratic Republic, a German worker gets a job in Siberia; aware of how all mail will be read by the censors, he tells his friends: ‘Let’s establish a code: if a letter you get from me is written in ordinary blue ink, it’s true; if it’s written in red ink, it’s false.’ After a month, his friends get the first letter, written in blue ink: ‘Everything is wonderful here: the shops are full, food is abundant, apartments are large and properly heated, cinemas show films from the West, there are many beautiful girls ready for an affair — the only thing you can’t get is red ink.
Max Pinckers wil werken naar fictie in de documentaire fotografie. Voor het werk ‘Lotus’, een documentaire met als onderwerp transgenders in Thailand, werkte Max Pinckers samen met Quinten De Bruyn, dat leidde tot hun eerste fotoboek. In G262 toont Pinckers een greep uit drie verschillende documentaire reeksen die bepalend zijn voor zijn werk. Zijn kijkbeeld als fotograaf komt tot uiting in diverse thema’s doorheen de tentoonstelling. Voor ‘The Fourth Wall en Will They Sing Like Raindrops or Leave Me Thirsty’ groeide een samenwerking met kunstenaar Gauthier Oushoorn die door het toevoegen van sculpturale elementen en ruimtelijke ingrepen het werk van Pinckers versterkt, en vice versa.
