Katerina Gregos is aangesteld als directeur van EMST, het nationale museum voor hedendaagse kunst in Athene. Gregos gaat op 1 juli van start.
Lina Mendoni, Minister van Cultuur en Sport, zegt het volgende over Gregos' aanstelling: “With her international experience, her rich exhibition and publishing history and her numerous collaborations with international institutions, Katerina Gregos is the person who can lead EMST to its new era: towards a museum of contemporary art that is welcoming to the public, active, dynamic, at the forefront of developments in culture and which serves to unite the visual arts community in Greece. The aim of this new era of EMST is to contribute decisively to the enhancement of Athens as a major European centre for contemporary creation, which will promote the work of Greek artists, engender and promote innovative ideas and foster a dynamic and meaningful artistic dialogue. As a focal point of culture in the city of Athens, EMST is a key part of the network of new museums in the city, which now highlight Athens as a top cultural destination".
Katerina Gregos is kunsthistorica, curator en schrijver. Ze trad op als curator van o.a. de 1st Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, de Göteborg Biënnale, Manifesta, Contour – Biennial of Moving Image en E V+A - Ireland’s Biennial. Voor de Biënnale van Venetië cureerde ze drie landspaviljoenen: Denemarken met de internationale groepstentoonstelling Speech Matters (2011), België met de tentoonstelling Personne et les Autres: Vincent Meessen and Guests(2015) en Traces of Disappearing: In Three Acts, een solotentoonstelling van Igor Grubić voor het Kroatisch Paviljoen (2019). Gregos begon haar loopbaan als stichtend directeur van de Deste Foundation’s Centre for Contemporary Art in Athene. In 2006 werd ze artistiek directeur van Argos - Centre for Audiovisual Arts en verhuisde naar Brussel, waar ze tot op vandaag woont. Nadien was ze actief als onafhankelijk curator en als artistiek directeur van Art Brussels. In 2016 werd ze aangesteld als curator beeldende kunsten voor de non-profit Schwarz Foundation (München/Athene). In de voorbije twintig jaar heeft Gregos zich als curator gefocust op de relatie tussen kunst, samenleving en politiek, met bijzondere aandacht voor democratie, mensenrechten, economie, ecologie, crisis en wijzigende globale productiemodellen.
Gregos’ meest recente project is de tentoonstelling Modern Love: or Love in the Age of Cold Intimacies, dat werd getoond in het Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg (2020/21) en deze zomer doorreist naar Tallinn Art Hall (EE) en naar IMPAKT Media Organisation, Utrecht (NL).
Katerina Gregos zal haar tijd verdelen tussen Athene en Brussel.
